Kaplan’s photographic career has been long, varied, and consistently successful.
She began in 1960 in Hollywood working in various positions in the motion picture industry, from secretarial to associate producing and on to directing. It was there that she fell in love with the camera.
In 1970 Kaplan moved to Paris, France and became a high fashion photographer covering the major fashion houses of Europe. Five years later she moved her studio back to Hollywood, continuing fast paced and highly competitive fashion and magazine photography around the world. “Those years,” she tells us, “were a passport to wonderful places, and a door-opener for meeting other artists. I was learning, always learning, always something new and exciting.”
For five years, between 1975 and 1980 Columbia Pictures, Warner Brothers and Paramount Pictures gave her the opportunity to work with the biggest stars, producers, and directors of the era. Many of Kaplan’s photographs remain the timeless image of Hollywood’s most famous. She says of her portrait photography, “I never set out to simply take a photo, creating a photograph was always my mission”
In 1996 Kaplan moved to Redstone, Colorado seeking freedom to experiment
with landscape, environment, natural shapes and color, a new medium. She says, “My camera became a paintbrush, and I began painting with light. It has been a wonderful journey.”
As is her lifetime body of work—on the cutting edge, Kaplan’s photos excite, provoke, inspire, and most importantly are beautiful.
